Connecticut Scenery Trips

Connecticut scenery trips are world famous, especially during the fall.

Nowhere does fall foliage like Connecticut, so it’s little surprise that from around mid September until the end of October thousands of people make the trip, almost like a pilgrimage, to see the vivid and vibrant colors. It can get pretty busy on the roads around Connecticut in the fall, especially during the weekends so if you fancy a more leisurely trip with less traffic it’s better to visit mid week if possible. Some of the best scenery is actually found off the beaten track so to speak, so it’s also a good idea to take some of the back-roads, pull on your hiking boots, pump up your bicycle tires or find some other way to take in the sheer splendor of color in Connecticut. Whenever you make the journey there are a couple of things you should remember:

  • Pre-book your accommodation, you may very well live to regret it if you don’t
  • Take your camera – there are terrific photo opportunities around every corner and you don’t want to miss a single one of them
  • Take your binoculars – you might want a closer look

When to Go

Not all of the leaves turn color all at once, thankfully, so there are websites which will tell you when is the best time to visit each particular area. Usually, the best color starts towards the north in late September and kind of runs down towards the south by the end of October, with parts of the coast still boasting fantastic vibrant colors into early November. However, do not allow yourself to be fooled, even before the leaves turn that distinctive shade of crimson, there are some pretty remarkable colors to be seen. If a child colored a picture of a tree in such vivid colors you’d think they were color blind or crazy, but trust me, they’re not, not if they’ve been to Connecticut in the fall anyway.

Different Trips

There are plenty of different scenery trips that you can take, which, incidentally, are still beautiful whatever the time of year you decide to visit.

  • Shenipsit State Forest in Somers Drive and Walk is a very popular destination in the Hartford / Central region as is the
  • Talcott Mountain State Park and Heublain Tower
  • Torrington to Norfolk around People’s State Forest is a 68 mile journey (best drive this one then) in the Litchfield / Northwest region. Why not stop off at Lake McDonough for a picnic. There’s wheelchair access so everybody can enjoy the peace and tranquility of this unspoiled recreation area.
  • New Milford around Iron Mountain Preserve and Lake Waramaug is slightly shorter, some 64 miles and well worth the journey with points of interest all along the way.
  • Waterbury area loop. If you don’t have much time to spare but don’t want to miss out completely then the Waterbury area loop is just perfect, it could be completed in around 2 hours if you don’t stop too long looking at the views, but there’s plenty of things worth looking at, heading through Black Rock Park with hiking opportunities, views to die for and native Indian legends.

With many other Connecticut trips to choose from, it’s a good idea to get a map to find these routes, or alternatively just go where the fancy takes you.
